| What is AEAS? |
AEAS is a tool for training and exercising emergency response decision makers and evaluating
emergency response plans.
- Sophisticated simulation technology that is easy to use
- 15 scenarios: 12 CBRNE (including flu pandemic), 3 for system familiarization
- Participant roles available from within the EOC and at the incident site
- Comprehensive After Action Review facilitates discussion, includes suggestions for improvement, and generates take-home reports
- Easy to set up and run
- Customizable resource and equipment sets
- Incorporates several components of the National Incident Management System (NIMS), including the Incident Command System (ICS)
- Real time event progression mimics real world stress
There are several ways AEAS can be leveraged to conduct or complement training events.
- Individual Training: Allows a single emergency response professional to work through a scenario with simulated team mates. Provides an individual with a good introduction to potential issues that may arise prior to collaborating with a team on a solution.
- Tabletop Exercises
- Traditional Tabletop: You can use the AEAS scenario injects and expected actions to develop and conduct a traditional tabletop. AEAS provides a tool where you can print out a paper copy of the injects and expected actions for each scenario.
- Tabletop with AEAS: You can use a projector to display an AEAS station to the exercise participants.
As injects or discussion points are presented by AEAS, an exercise controller pauses the simulation so participants can discuss possible courses of action. If a decision is made to take an action, the controller inputs the action into AEAS, where it affects exercise progression and outcomes.
- Functional Exercises: Exercise participants are each assigned an AEAS computer station and an emergency response role. Scenario injects are presented to the user through simulated communications such as email, radio, and television. Participants are encouraged to communicate via normal channels with each other and enter all decisions into their AEAS computer station.
AEAS was developed by the National Guard Bureau with the purpose of preparing
our nation's first responders to handle catastrophic
events in an effective and timely manner. Applied Research Associates (ARA)
has a dedicated team supporting AEAS's users and further development of the system.
